Clarke's skill as a goalscorer in his playing days was
unquestioned. His management ability had been tested as he dragged
Barnsley out of the Fourth Division and when Leeds approached him
to restore to Elland Road the glory days he'd known as a player, he
siezed the opportunity. In his first season, he managed to tighten
up the defence and maintain a modicum of respectability, ending up
9th in the table.
Unfortunately, the following year saw the defence leak goals and
record signing Peter Barnes fail to justify his fee, and after 16
years in the top flight, Leeds were relegated and Clarke was
sacked. He subsequently managed Scunthorpe, Barnsley and
Peterborough, but - other than an FA Cup win over Leeds for
Scunthorpe - enjoyed little success.
