Leeds' first black player, Gerry Francis came to England in 1956
and tried out for Leeds as an amateur before turning professional
in summer 1957. His main run in the side came in 1960-61, and he
scored some spectacular goals, but the side was unsettled with both
players and managers changing on a regular basis and he moved on to
spend a year at York before returning to South Africa.
Brian Thomas says: A strong running right winger who would
probably do welin the modern game at right side midfield posessed a
good shot and a decent header of the then heavy ball.
Paul Wild says: I teach Gerry's grandson. We were just looking
on the internet to find out about his Grammpy, and found your site!
Boy, we're we excited to find information about him! We are in
Canada.
