A versatile defender/midfielder signed from Sheffield United in
summer 1979, Gary Hamson's work rate and commitment endeared him to
the fans in a side that was heading towards relegation. He was
known for his spiky temperament and was never less than fully
committed - and when he picked up a 9-match ban for picking up so
many bookings in 1980-81 it came as no real surprise. In the final
game of the 81-82 season he picked up a knee injury at West Brom
that kept him out for some time, and although he returned to the
side he didn't seem to be the same player. After brief spells with
Bristol City and Port Vale, he was finally forced to retire from
the game with a recurring ankle injury.
Dave Taylor says: Gary Hamson was an FBA for the Press
Association when I did the Nott'm Forest vs. Stoke match on
Saturday (6-0!). He's a top bloke.
sam clarke says: football legend
steve ince, adam terry, adam buck say: Gary managed West Hallam
Juniors and made sure we went in 110% for every tackle. Cheers for
your help Gary
adam till says: he was my manager at youth level and used to
drop me when i didn't paly well, i cried one game so he out me on
and I scored! HE IS A LEGEND
Neil Harry Creasey says: i used to fetch the ball 4 steve ince
when he missed (not often) i was on the bench cleaning boots until
Gary gave me my chance when star player Ince was suspended, he gave
me a chance and now I am captain of the team, cheers Gaz!
Steve Wright says: Before Gary injured his knee in the WBA game
that relegated us to div 2 in the early eighties before the premier
league was formed he was an outstanding midfielder with a great
left foot and as fit as any midfielder around at the time.We never
saw his true potential and as a supporter of both Sheffield United
and Leeds felt that when he returned from injury after almost two
years out was never the same player and left many of us thinking of
what a graet player he could have been
Thomas Bamford says: He is now an agent to young Celtic star
Aiden Mcgeady as well as being an MP for the Liberal Democrats
Steven Ince says: gary was a great player and used to be my
manager. i rarely played as i am an awful player but gary gave alot
of encouragement. i broke into the team when adam till was ill 1
game, (hes going to be the next roy keane and its all down to gary)
i then secured a place because many of the team quit but now i can
be described as a solid honest left back...cheerz gary!
Jez Parker says: Didn't Gary take the worst penalty ever in
front of the Kop. I think there were five mins to go, we were
drawing and he scuffed the kick to the goalies left. He'd dived
right, but the ball hit the post and bounced out. another player
ran in to score, but Gary pushed him out of the way and kicked it
wide. It wouldn't have counted anyway as the goalie hadn't touched
it. Anyone else remember this - who it was against and when ?
