Thomas Wedlock Henderson was picked up as a Scottish schoolboy
by Leeds (ooo-er!) but failed to settle in Yorkshire and soon
returned home to Scotland. He played for Hearts and St Mirren - and
made it to the final of the Scottish Cup in 1962. With a bit more
experience under his belt, Don Revie decided to make a move for him
and things might have worked out quite a bit differently for him if
a certain Johnny Giles hadn't been signed to take on the same
position. He went through a quick succession of lower division
clubs, and ended up at Altrincham towards the end of the 1960s.
Ian Gledhill says: I remember my 'Boys Book of Soccer 1957' - or
it could have been 1956 - contained details of the England v
Scotland Schoolboys international match at Wembley. The two inside
forwards for Scotland were Tommy Henderson and another young man
called Billy Bremner. The report said that Billy Bremner would have
been the outstanding player on the pitch that afternoon if only
Tommy Henderson had not outshone him.
Ian Gledhill says: This is a correction to my earlier note
concerning the exact year of the football annual which contained
the report of the Schoolboys international. Players had to be under
fifteen years of age at the beginning of the season - in those days
that was the fourth formers. As far as I can remember, the match
took place each May. All this means that the match must have been
in May 1958 if Tommy was born in September 1943. I must have got
the book for Christmas in 1958. I was eight at the time. Sorry to
be pedantic. I just wanted it to be right.
