Promising keeper picked up when Manchester United decided they
did not want their young apprentice. Hughes found himself playing
second string to David Harvey at Leeds, and when Mervyn Day was
brought in to replace Harvey, he moved on to Bury. His first
Northern Ireland cap came against England at Wembley, but a
shoulder injury that caused a blip in his club career also put him
out of international contention.
Rob Carroll says: I was coached by Phil since I was 7 and he
made me the person and player I am today. He got me at Leeds for a
trial season and I am looking forward to seeing him very soon. He
told me his claim to fame was when he played England at Wembley
when Gary Lineker scored 2 past him in the second half. Hard lines
Phil!
Tony Park says: Hi, I am trying to contact Phil as i am writing
a book and was hoping someone could let me know of his current
wherabouts. By the way, Man Utd offered Phil a Pro Contract but HE
turned it down and came to Leeds. Apparently it was out of the blue
for Man Utd as they wanted to keep him!
Dave says: He is currently coaching my son.
