Known as one of the better keepers from the lower divisions,
Humphreys was signed by Leeds and didn't quite live up to
expectations. He lost his place to Tom Younger, and a year later
the emergence of Gary Sprake meant he had no future at Leeds, so he
dropped down into non-league football with Gravesend and Northfleet
before returning for a few seasons with Mansfield and
Chesterfield.
Ian Gledhill says: I am sure Alan Humphreys had some involvement
with the England Under 23 set-up while he was at Leeds. Whether he
actually played is another matter but I seem to remember him being
called up for international squads. My recollection of him is that
he was an extremely agile goalie who regularly pulled off acrobatic
saves.
R Spencer says: Alan was called up for the Under 23 against
Hungary, but didn't play in the game. I met him when he was at
Mansfield Town and he ran a Sunday team called ONRYC, which
produced two Chesterfield keepers of renown; Steve Hardwick who
went to Newcastle and Steve Ogrizovic who went to Liverpool. Alan
hasn't stopped talking for years!
