Sheffield-born fullback who found himself facing his old
team-mates from Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final a couple of
months after joining Leeds. At Coventry, he'd been used mainly in
midfield, but under Billy Bremner he was an attacking left-back - a
position he continued in with some success after he left Leeds to
join Southampton.
Adams subsequently enjoyed some success as a manager, and was
unlucky to be sacked by Fulham to make way for Kevin Keegan when
he'd already managed to make good progress on a limited budget. He
returned to management at Brighton did a good enough job there to
pick up a higher-profile position.
When nobody else came calling to take him on, he decided to join
his old friend Harry Bassett as his assistant at Leicester City as
they struggle to escape the pit that Peter Taylor dug for them.
City were indeed relegated, and Adams took over as the club's
manager, achieving some pretty credible results as a financial
crisis took the club into administration and left them in serious
danger of going out of business. A consortium fronted by Gary
Lineker acquired the club and Adams did enough with the limited
resources available to him to drag the side back up into the
Premiership at the end of the 2002-03 season.
With limited money available to strengthen the squad, relegation
back to the second tier was inevitable - although his side did
manage to hammer Leeds 4-0 live on Sky as they slid down the table.
After a poor start to the 2004-05 season, and with rumours of
dressing room unrest on top of some poorly-performing transfer
picks, October saw Adams offer his resignation, which the board
reluctantly accepted.
