Son of Manchester City's Ken (but unrelated to Dallas's Cliff),
Barnes best years were also at Maine Road, scoring in the Final and
picking up a medal as City beat Newcastle in the League Cup in
1976. In 1979 a series of high-profile, high-price moves sent him
round numerous clubs, but it was the start of a downward spiral for
him as the weight of expectation brought about by the large
transfer fee was never justified. At Leeds in particular, he was a
club-record signing, but his failure to deliver the goods (and the
goals in particular) in a team struggling against relegation did
much to seal the fate of the team and manager Allan Clarke. Odd
stat time: he is half of the only father and son pair to bag a 1st
Division hat-trick since the war.

was the most talented player I have ever seen. An enigma but god I
adored him and still do. I wish I could get hold of one of those
elastic training balls he sponsored in the late 70's. I love the
bloke, the greatest left foot ever.
