Scottish inside-forward who had a couple of seasons at Elland
Road in the late 1950s. Signed by Raich Carter from Dunfermline, he
never managed to translate his apparent skills on the training
ground into on-field success - scoring just 6 goals in 44 games -
but the manager persisted with him. When Leeds failed to renew
Carter's contract, O'Brien's days were numbered. He proved the
doubters at Leeds wrong with a highly successful spell at
Southampton as they climbed up from Division 3 to the top flight,
finally retiring from the professional game at the comparatively
young age of 33 and stayed on the south coast.
Paddy Maxwell says: I am a big Southampton fan and George
O'Brien was my favourite player in the sixties. He was quick and
strong and had a tremendous shot. He played a big part in Saints'
promotion to Div 1 in 1966. He was very unlucky not to win a
Scottish cap.
