Reserve team keeper whose only two appearances were in European
ties and being replaced in both. In his first game, Leeds went down
0-4 against Lierse SK and in his second he was injured against
Hibs, and with Gary Sprake also out it let Glan Letheran in for one
of his two appearances. Shaw later went on to be a stalwart in the
south-west, first with Bristol City and then with Exeter.
Jabba says: Cheers to Barry from Somerset for the photo.
Frank Boyle says: I lived in the same street as John Shaw in
Stirling when I was a boy.He was a year younger than me but already
very big for his age. We used to play football in the field at the
back of our street till all hours. He always wanted to be in goal.
Billy Bremner came from Stirling too , so I think Leeds were always
on the look out for any new talent and so they signed him.I'm sorry
it didn't work out for him there.
Neil Phelps says: John Shaw played for Gloucester City until the
end of 1989. More info
here.
Rev Kev, Wigan says: John was a nice bloke at Ashton Gate, the
financial meltdown in 1982 really got to him, hence the loss of
hair. He saw the reborn club through two years of Div. 4 football
and will be remembered as a hero of the club. God bless him,
wherever he is and whatever he's up to.
