Shez was a great midfielder who signed for Leeds as a schoolboy
and was a key part of successive managers' midfields as Leeds tried
in vain to escape from Division 2. He was immensely popular with the
fans, but despite his talents the team stayed down and when Howard
Wilkinson joined, it seemed that the disciplinarian Wilko couldn't
find room in his side for the talented but occasionally hotheaded
Sheridan and he was transferred to Forest.
He only played one game for Forest, but stayed longer at Sheffield
Wednesday, scoring a penalty against Leeds at Hillsborough (but since
Leeds scored the other 6 goals on that day we didn't mind too much).
He's still in the game, turning out for his old team-mate Andy Ritchie
at Oldham, operating in the centre of midfield and voted "Player of
the Year" by the supporters. Although Ritchie is no longer in charge,
Shez has remained at Oldham continuing to impress with his skill
and vision.
Ciaran Diver says: John Sheridan was my boyhood hero! He was for
Leeds in the 80s what Jan Molby was for Liverpool, a genius at passing
and a joy to watch. I was gutted when Leeds sold him. He was one of
the most naturally gifted midfielders I've seen and I'm glad to hear
that he's still turning it on for Oldham.
Rick Wallis says: Being an avid Oldham Athletic fan, I can tell you
this guy is a god. When he plays, everything goes through him. He has
vision, poise and control that gives him an extra yard on opponents. I
believe that he has recently accepted an offer from OAFC to become a
coach at the club when he eventually retires - I hope it is not for a
couple of seasons yet though!!
Emma says: John Sheridan is my absolute hero. I have been a
Wednesday supporter since the age of 12 and I am now 25. The best goal
he scored for Wednesday was in 1991 against Luton Town when he scored
from a free kick. Phil King rolled it back to him and he just flicked
it up with his right foot into the top corner. Sheer class!!! I've met
him a few times, and as well as being one of the finest players ever
to wear a Wednesday shirt, John is also one of the nicest guys you
could wish to meet. Been to Oldham a couple of times and he is still
doing the business. David Pleat should never have sold him
Sean Murray says: One of the best Leeds players of all time. Great
vision, skill, laser-guided passing. The goal when he lobbed the ball
over the Derby Co wall was cos-bloody-mic.
Ivan Bralić says: i am a big wednesday fan from croatia.i
started suporting wednesday after watching john sheridan play for
republic of ireland on the road for Usa 1994.Best passer of the ball I
ever watch.Gazza eat yourself
Steve says: a peerless passer of the ball. great free kicks. thanks
for the memories, john.
Johnny Lord says: leeds legend.....still have a t-shirt from the
80's with just the words shezza is god.... Carried round the pitch by
leeds fans at the end of one season...says it all really. Cheers for
the memories shezza...and even thanks for that goal that beat the scum
for wednesday at wembley....i just know you were thinking of the
gelderd end when you hit that
J.Cameron says: The best passer of a ball i've ever seen.I force
the sunday side i coach to watch him on video.God,some of the so
called stars we've had to try and replace him aren't fit to tie the
mans boots. If only Wednesday could clone him.
James Wales says: Shez is good mates with my uncle and I had the
honour of meeting on a few occasions. At 7 years old I went to Elland
Road to buy the new shirt for the 88 season but they had none in my
size. We went to Shez's house and he gave me his Leeds shirt and also
the shirt he wore for Ireland in the 88 Europeon Championships
(although he never actually got on). The guy is a legend. He was the
greatest passer of the ball I have ever seen and it was a pleasure to
meet him.
Dale H says: A god...have to agree with emma..that goal against
luton but dont forget the rumbleows cup final against man utd in
1991..he may have gone my fellow wednesdayites but we will playing
against him in div 2 next season. If anyone went to David Hirst's
testimonial get in touch with me dez_guvnor@hotmail.com
Danielle says: He used to nick the sweets and crisps out of the
drawer that me and my cousin had saved for our midnight feast!!!
Adie says: I'm a Leeds fan of many years, and for all the European
nights I still remember the good old days of the second division, Shez
was 'the man' a proper Leeds hero, good to see he is still doing the
buissness.
Keith Holmes says: Saw Sheri play for Leeds in a more loyal era
than now. He was always destined for greater things. Later saw him
play for Wednesday a few times and have been to Oldham a couple of
times - a class act!
Richard Clegg says: An amazing performance for Oldham against
Sheffield Wednesday.
lee says: there are two words for john sheridan world class
chris lynch says: John Sheridan, a proper wednesday legend. him,
hirsty and waddle WERE the 90's. get yourself back to hillsboro
jonno!!! Pay attention chris turner!!
Richard Dunkerley says: Quite simply one of the finest players to
ever pull on an owls shirt. Thanks Big Ron for signing him. My
favourite memory was the game in our promo season when he scored 2
goals after a run of poor games and penalty misses. He gave it to the
crowd! AFter the dross that has played for us since, Owls fans must
now be pretty embarassed that they would ever criticize our
sherry.
Ray Toulson says: Wednesday Legend - John was true class -A great
footballer - a pleasure to watch - the linch pin of a great Wednesday
side who won the league cup in 1991 and gained promotion the same year
then finished 3rd in the premiership and reached both cup finals in
1993.
