Jon Newsome came from Sheffield Wednesday in the same package
that brought us David Wetherall, and for a while it looked like
they could form the centreback partnership for the future. Newsome
didn't play in many games in his first season at Elland Road, but
he did score a crucial goal on that nerve-wracking Sunday morning
at Bramall Lane that set us up to win the title when Man U went
down to Liverpool in the afternoon.
The following season saw him frequently used in the right-back
slot - a role that he was totally ill-suited for - and although he
returned for another run at centreback towards the end of 1993-94,
he was released in the summer and played for Norwich, Sheffield
United and Bolton before an injury forced his retirement from the
game in 2000.
In 2002 he has taken the first step into management, taking over
at Dr Martens Western Division side Gresley Rovers: he has said he
might occasionally play on but only in an emergency.
