Rod Wallace became a key part of the 1992 championship-winning
side, teaming up well with Lee Chapman to keep the goals flowing.
With the departure of Chapman and with no settled partner (or
indeed position), he seemed to fade a little over the last couple
of seasons (although his tally of 7 league goals made him Leeds'
top scorer in 1996-97!); his tendency to leave the ball behind and
slip as he turned - which the fans accepted when he was knocking in
goals and setting the up - began to be a reason to knock him.
With his contract due to run out, GG decided to apply some
pressure - publicly upbraiding him for not wanting to stay and sign
a new contract. A slight case of the pot calling the kettle
black... He went off to Rangers on a Bosman and scored a hatful in
Scotland. A brief stay back south of the border helped Bolton hang
on to their Premier League status, but in the close season he moved
down a level to play for Gillingham and was described by Gills
chairman Paul Scally as their biggest signing of all time! A
pre-season injury kept him out of contention early on, but he
appeared in both of the Gills' FA Cup games against Leeds and
finished the season as the club's second top scorer.
Gillingham fan says: Rod Wallace is a great player, I am a
Gillingham Fan and I think he will have a great future at
gillingham despite his age, Thankyou Leeds for breeding such a
footballing legend!
Chris says: How good was his goal for leeds against Spurs when
he took everyone on from the halfway line then finished it top left
hand corner
anon says: Lots of great moments from Rod in a Leeds shirt.
Especially the goal against spurs which won goal of the season on
match of day.
francis mCintosh says: a great solo goal from rod wallace but he
used to get shackled by .irwin but he was a player who alwayz
thought it wasnt a day to show off the skills
Collette (Computer Whizz) says: Carlton Palmer is a really nice
guy. He always took time to say Hi. He's tall and good looking
too!
krish says: amazing for us cheers rod, shouldve stayed longer
come back and help us win the title back !!! :D
Ste says: Go on Rodney!!! Smart move going to Rangers to play in
the SPL - he looked like a mix between Best, Pele, Rooney,
Maradonna, Ronaldo, Shearer and Gascoigne - but with more pace,
skill and shooting ability - a sign that the Scottish league is not
as advanced as ours i'm not sure but Wallace gave us some fond
memories too - Remember that goal against Spurs - ooooooooooooooh!
TASTY!!!
