Tony Agana made just a couple of appearances for Leeds while on
loan from Notts County. He was a tall, rangy striker who bagged
plenty of goals in the lower divisions, but wasn't quite up to
scratch in the top flight.
Tomo (a Blade) says: I have to take issue with your "not quite
up to scratch" comment. Tony Agana had top flight pedigree but was
hampered by injury. He looked brilliant for the blades in their
first season back in the top flight before being sold to Notts
County. You should have played him with Brian Deane! I could never
understand Wilkinson signing a load of Sheff U players on loan
(Beesley, Pemberton etc)they weren't good enough to play for the
Blades, how on earth did Wilko expect them to do thebusiness for
you?!
Richard Walker says: Isaw Tony Agana play for Leek Town during
the 1998/99 season. At that time they were a Conference club and
he'd been signed after a spell with Cliftonville. He played well
and worked hard, scoring on his debut at Kettering. He must have
caused some offence at Hereford, because when they came to play
against us they chanted at him all game, and several of them told
me he was bad news. He always played very well for us, despite his
age he was a lot quicker than many defenders he came up against.
Despite his efforts he never quite won over a lot of the fans. Late
in the season, with relegation looming, our manager, Ernie Moss,
was sacked and Agana put in his place. The job was essentially
impossible, we had no money and a depleted squad. We had to play
Agana's first ever club, Welling United, in a game which would
decide who stayed up. Many 'fans' reckoned Agana would do his old
team a favour. We lost the game 4-2. However, Agana, who was
carrying an injury, started the game and scored the opening goal
before it became impossible for him to play on. I think that spoke
volumes for his proffesionalism and determination. After leaving
the Social Club that evening I saw Agana in the car park, I thanked
him for his efforts (for it wasn't for want of trying on his part)
and said 'It's not how hard you fall, but how high you bounce'. He
thanked me for my good wishes. Shortly after Leek decided to look
elswhere for a manager and Agana departed to Guiseley. I assume he
is now retired, unless you can tell me differently.
abbi agana says: I am Tony Agana's niece Abbi Agana, I saw him
play several times with determination and skill. On a personal level
he is an amazing person
