Jabba's Comments

There's only one Carlton Palmer. And he smokes... well...nothing of course - he's a professional footballer.

The gangly centre-back/midfielder has plenty of critics out there, but in a career with numerous clubs he's managed to pick up some England caps (okay, under Graham Taylor but they still count) and managers have been keen to have him in their teams for his all-round ability. His arrival at Leeds wasn't exactly popular: having sold David Batty to Blackburn, we spent the money on buying Palmer notionally as a centre back but almost immediately (after more than a few costly free kicks were conceded around the area) started using him in Batty's position in midfield.

In his time at Leeds, he did what he always does: give 100%, win the ball and get tangled up with the opposition to concede a foul. He frequently looked amazed as the ref gave decisions against him, and you could sometimes see why - particularly when a typically whinging performance from Alan Shearer got Carlton a red card at Elland Road.

Like several others, he found himself being used less and less by GG and it was no surprise to see him leave Elland Road in 1997. He's since had a couple of decent seasons at Southampton (but picking up a red card at Elland Road) and Cov, and linked up with former England boss Taylor on loan at Watford. He returned briefly to Coventry but was released on a free to return to Hillsborough in early 2001.

In November 2001 he was announced as the new manager of struggling Stockport County - his first managerial role and it will be interesting to see how he gets on and how much he feels he needs to play himself. The club was in serious financial problems apart from any on-field problems and after being forced to sell two of his best players almost immediately, Carlton set out planning on how to organise the team to get back into Division 1 since relegation was inevitable following record-breaking runs of defeats.
