Signed by GG in the latter half of the 97-98 season, he was
initially thought to be either a solution to Leeds' intractable
left-back problem, or a replacement/back-up for Molenaar or
Wetherall in the centre of the defence.
Having done a very solid job as one of our 3 centrebacks (with
Molenaar and Radebe), he contributed to a solid unbeaten run at the
start of the season as well as providing some good width when going
forward. Unfortunately he fell victim to the disgraceful state of
the pitch at Old Trafford, and was out for the rest of the season
with cruciate ligament damage.
He's now nearly back to full fitness, and with Lucas Radebe away
on international duty he might see a little bit of first team
action to add to the reserves and bench appearances he's managed
since returning in December. At the end of May 2000, Martin was
transferred back to his native Austria so that he could get himself
back to full fitness and have a decent chance of first-team
football and he is now back as a regular in the national side.
