A promising young lad who made the squad for the Portsmouth cup
game and played the whole of the second half after Danny Granville
came off with an injury. In 1999-2000 he was a regular on the bench
and has made some competent appearances in midfield, as well as
being voted Welsh Young Player of the Year and making his full
international debut for Wales.
At the start of the 2000-01 season, it was clear he wasn't
regarded as a particularly good option by DOL, and with the club
needing the money to ensure that the transfers of Keane and
Ferdinand went through, he was sold to Leicester.
After taking some time to impress new manager Dave Bassett he
got himself into the side but suffered a cruciate ligament injury
at Liverpool early in 2002 which has kept him on the sidelines for
the whole year, but at the start of 2003 has come back into the
side and has also return to the Welsh national team. He was made
available on a free transfer at the end of the 2002-03 season.
Jessica says: I met Matthew Jones in about 1996 when he came to
play in the Dallas Cup soccer tournament at my high school in
Texas, USA. Yes, we took a photo together, too. I happened upon
this website and I'm glad to see that he is successful!
Dan Leadbeater says: I went to School with Matthew and have
remained friends with him ever since!. He came to my school in
Boston Spa whilst being a YTS player at Leeds. I have stayed in
touch with him and he still remains one of my best mates. So much
so I am going to his wedding this saturday in Wales which should be
great. He is doing well after recovering from a bad injury but only
last week was told he is to find a new club by leicester!. I feel
for him. But he is a great player and person and will bounce back
with ease im sure!. Leicester will regret releasing him just as
Leeds will! Come on Peter Reid sign him up!. Matt Jones is great
lad with agreat heart and I wish him all the best in world!
