Carl Shutt's league career started at the relatively late age of
23, joining Wilko at Wednesday from Spalding United. After a couple
of seasons with the Owls he moved down to Bristol City before Wilko
arranged to swap Bob Taylor and one pile of cash for Shutty and
another pile of cash.
Shutty quickly got himself into Leeds fans' good books with a
hat-trick in his first game for the club, and his tireless running
and unwillingness to give up any cause - however hopeless - made
him a popular figure in his 4 years at Elland Road. Frequently used
as a sub, the moment that all Leeds fans will remember best is his
appearance at the Nou Camp against Stuttgart in 1992. In the
replayed European Cup tie, he had come on to replace a largely
ineffectual Cantona, and within a couple of minutes had played a
long one-two with Tony Dorigo and scored the winner that sent the
assembled Leeds fans wild.
After leaving Leeds he played for a number of lower division
clubs and became manager at non-league Kettering, leading them back
to the Conference at the first attempt. In 2002/03 he had to manage
on a shoestring with the club up for sale. Despite the odd win
relegation was inevitable from an early stage, and when it was
finally confirmed the club decided to terminate his contract before
the end of the season. In March 2004 he pitched up as the new
manager of Bradford Park Avenue in the Unibond League and managed
to steer them through the play-offs and into the new Conference
North league. In 2004/05, a serious player shortage meant that he
once again pulled on his boots for the team, and even managed to
get on the scoresheet again.
Steve Tite says: Shutty is currently doing a great job (in his
first season as a manager) at Kettering Town FC and having recently
turned 40 he still looks classy on the pitch when he turns out.
