Experienced full-back who was one of Billy Bremner's last
signings. Williams had enjoyed a great career with Aston Villa,
winning a League Championship medal and also being a part of the
side that beat Bayern Munich to take the European Cup in 1982.
Villa's slide from such lofty heights was slow to start, but by
1987 they were relegated and Williams was released. He gained a
regular place at Elland Road, but under Wilko his chances were more
and more limited, and he was released on a free transfer in
1990.
Nick Pennington says: I used to work with Gary in a pub in
Boston Spa, where he was learning the pub trade in preparation to
one day buying one. I found him to be a very nice, interesting and
lively man, who must prefer Yorkshire to the Midlands!
We did have many conversations about football, but didn't really
mention Leeds. The best part of his career was spent at Villa, and
listening to his memories of the 1982 European Cup were
spell-binding. The man marked Diego Maradona for goodness sake!!
This was excellent stuff.
By the way, he claimed to me that he did win some England caps, at
his time at Villa, though they were friendlies and he never played
for England in a competative match.
Katie says: hey,i live opposite gary and hes a great guy,ive
known him years and hes bin a big inspiration 2 me,and my footie
m8s,we luk up 2 u gaz!rock on!
simon williams says: Gary Williams is my Dad, and i am hoping to
follow in his footsteps if i could be half the player he was i will
have a great carrer, i have just turned professional footballer
myself i play in the premiership in Finland, i am there now, so i
hope one day i can be like him, oh by the way he was injury hit at
Leeds and when he came back wilko was in charge ask any pro what
they think of him, and villa wanted him to stay were he was, also
forget to say when he was at villa, he was linked with the likes of
Arsnal, Nottingham Foreset and Rangers. Thank you
johnathen zoltie says: I think that Gary william was i very
steady player it was true that his highs of his carrer was at the
villa, but injury hit him at united and was unlucky, but when he did
play he was very steady and experienced player, i must say that i
once saw him walking through the city centre when he first camt to
united and i spock to him and wished him all the best with united.
He was very down to earth and pollite and considering what he had
achived in his career that was great, Once he left Leeds i followed
his career and he reganed his form at Watford and ended his career
at Bradford City very well, So i would like to say Gaza the true
Gentleman and proffesional
Mike Lonsdale says: I liked gary very much as a player he was a
steady player always gave 100% and i was very happy when he signed
for us.
Anna vesuella says: y name is Anna i am the girlfriend of Simon
gary's soon. Evem though i live in Finland and i have never seen
him play, but i have met him and simon is very proud of him and
makes me watch tapes of him, and he seemed like was a good player
and Si made me go on this site to put a comment on, so here it is,
Si is at practice write now so he will be happy wen i talk him and
say i done it. Kitos (Tank you)
Daniel Jmaes says: Good full back we could do with someone like
gary now in the team, stedy player, very consisdent. I live near
Gary now in a little village called Scarcroft near to Weaterby, i
am 17 years old, and i always see him driving past in his Mercadies
and he always waves to me, and i am friends with his younger son
and he always get's us free tickets to the Games. I can't remember
what he was like as a player but he is a great guy.
Chris Hiles says: i go drinking with Gary sometimes at the
Bingley arms in Bardsey and he is a grat laugh top lad, and when we
have had a fewc he and Brendon tell us all stories from the days
they are so funny, lets hope their wifes never find out
jon zoltie says: first of all, the person who posted my name in
one of the past comments was not me but i have a good idea who it
was!!! anyway, garys son and i are best mates and i thought i would
just mention that gary williams is a legend who played in top
flight football for quite a while. he had a great career and to
have a european cup medal to your name is something
special(especially after marking maradona!!!) i know the familly
well and gary is a gentleman, a squire and a good family guy who
has supported his son all the way through to his proffesional
signing through lots of advice and tuition. i owe the family a lot
of food from late night cravings after alcohol and so would like to
take the opportunity to say that i will one day take them out to
dinner.(including paulo the dog cos he is a legend also!!!) if sy
is reading this, i hope to see you soon mate, keep in touch.
Peter Hammingom says: Hay Gary Williams was a tariffic player
and is a true Gentleman and we could of done with him in the team
in resent events.
Simon Williams (son) says: hay Jon i have just red your
comments, thanks for those grat things you said about my Dad, he is
a true Gentleman and a squire and i want everyone to know that he
has always supported me with my football, i cant thank him enough
for what he has done for me in the past, i know that a am being
byest but to me he was the gratest full back of his time, just look
what he has won at the Villa, but there one thing i wish i could
achieve half the things that he has won and i will have a grat
career.
Simon Williams says: My Dad was not released from Villa he
choose to leave he was offered another contract but choose to go to
Leeds from other offers such as Forrest, Southampton to go to Leeds
because of the support and the potentioal, so please get you facts
right jabba, also i n his carrer the likes of Rangers, Arsenal,
Manchester United were all intrested but why go when he was winning
this with the Villa?
