John Grattan Hendrie (not named after the catalogue to the best
of my knowledge) was a talented - if injury-prone winger who spent
the Division 2 promotion season at Elland Road, although he missed
nearly 3 months of the campaign with assorted injuries. His crosses
and runs played a big part in the promotion campaign, and even
though he rarely completed the full 90 minutes of a game. His best
period as a player came during a 6 year stay at Boro where he
finally found a bit of fitness and used his pace to good effect. He
later had a spell in management with Barnsley and occasionally
appears on TV as a summariser or pundit for Sky.
Stephen Hendrie says: Autobiography sums up most of his antics
as a youngster. i.e. boy that was picking on him john peed on his
head (Don't ask how).
Thomas Hague says: John Hendrie had to be one of the best
players to put on a Bradford City shirt. I just loved watching
those bandy legs fly down the wing or the great use of his backside
to turn defenders and his great diving skill to win penalties. What
a guy.
Eggman says: John Hendrie is still is great, great player. I
played along with him in a soccer six charity event on Sunday, he
was amazing and cos of him, we won!Brilliant!
