John McCole was a quality centre-forward who cut his teeth in
Scottish football before moving down to Bradford, which is where
Leeds found him. He had an excellent scoring record, but with the
rest of the side not performing, Leeds were relegated and he
returned to Bradford. He subsequently had spells with a variety of
clubs - including a summer in the USA playing for a team of ex-pats
at New York Rangers.
Kathleen Gorry says: My maiden name was McCole I was born in
Glenties Co Donegal now I live in Liverpool
John McCole says: that's funny, i'm John Mccole
T says: Hi, I'm John McCole's niece. I'm afraid I did not know
my uncle very well. But my father always refered to him as Four
Goal McCole. For the brief period that I did get to know John he
was one of the nicest most amiable people you could meet. As for
Kathleen Gorry unless she has relatives in the Gweedore/Rosses
areas she is unlikely to be related. But I would be very interested
to find out the the John McCole
McCole says: I am Johns niece, and was wondering who T is? his
niece? comment above
Ian Johnson says: I remember John McCole playing for LUFC.It
doesn't take a genius to see that his goalscoring record for Leeds
is of the highest order, despite the difficulties of the team at
the time.
D Stead says: my hero at bcfc John was an enigma,he was a latter
day gazza a great footballer but a greater drinker. BCFC released
him after probs. as did LUFC.back to BCFC.on to Rotherham then
Dundalk and USA. John made Bobby Campbell look a vicar supping
sherry but every team he played for he scored goals, that was what
he got payed for and did, I have great memories of John at the
Locarno,Manningham Lane, cheers.
Pat Brennan (nee Burgess) says: John McCole was best man when I
married Tom Kasher in 1962 in Clayton, Bradford. Tom died in 2002
although we had been divorced since 1968. I remember John - a funny
man who was good company. You had to drink some to keep up with him
- we did! The wedding date (10/03/62) and time (10am) had to be
chosen carefully to allow both Bradford City and Leeds United
guests to attend. Some had to leave immediately after the wedding
to go and play footie. I believe they all had a snifter in The
Royal pub in Clayton (just above the church) beforehand. Good
memories.
Malcolm Mattok says: John lodged at the Duchess of Kent public
house in Bradford. Probably the worst place for a man with a drink
problem. He was the finest Centre Forward I ever saw and if he had
been firmly controlled I believe he would have ranked in the top
ten strikers of the last fifty years.
